MapAction Chiltern Challenge · 6 July 2012 to 8 July 2012 ·

MapAction believes that applying geospatial expertise to humanitarian situations can greatly improve outcomes for the people affected. Global humanitarian needs outstrip resources. Expert geospatial and data analysis can help stretch those resources for maximum impact. Many professionals want to donate their energy and skills to help. MapAction is the bridge which enables them to do so effectively. We are a non-profit organisation that collaborates with partners around the world to help anticipate, prepare for and respond to humanitarian emergencies. We strive to ensure governments, regional and local disaster management agencies and humanitarian responders have access to the information and analysis that they need to make key decisions, at the right times, to save lives and alleviate suffering. We are a team of around 100 people, 75% of them expert volunteers, plus a small roster of standby consultants. Combining the passion of volunteerism with the rigour and reliability of professional standards, the ‘MapAction spirit’ is something we work hard to maintain and the willingness of our team to go the extra mile is often fed back to us.

Story

On Friday 6th July, we'll be setting off on our tandem with a MapAction team for the second MapAction cycle ride. Last year we cycled between the Paris and London meridians and this year, for MapAction's 10th anniversary, we will be cycling a 170 mile route through the Chilterns over 3 days. For further information see http://www.mapaction.org/bike

MapAction works in disaster zones all over the world, creating regularly updated situational maps that allow other NGOs and the UN to make crucial decisions on getting aid to those who need it. In 2010 we both deployed to Pakistan following the flooding there, and earlier this year Becky deployed to the Philippines following a tropical storm and flash flooding. MapAction are currently responding to our 6th emergency of the year with a team currently in Paraguay as a result of a request for assistance after flooding there.
