It was June 28 2010 when I arrived in Ghana. I went there with a group called Projects Abroad to help build a preschool for the village’s school, and play with kids at the Mount Zion Foster Home. Throughout the two weeks I was there I got to know the town and it’s people. The other 14 volunteers and I visited markets and on the weekend we saw Cape Coast. Meeting families and finding out the type of life they were living was an eye opener for me. Many of these kids stayed home since they could not afford to go to school. Some of their siblings were even sent away to the foster home to be educated and fed. After asking around I figured out that it is only about $120 for a child to go to school for a whole school year where they have uniforms, books, lunch and some school supplies included. The kids that could go to school were so eager to learn and go to college, and eventually get a job to support their families. By just going to elementary school these kids were already set on the right path for a successful future. If I could get enough money to send all the kids in the small village of Akuapem, where I stayed, it would help these kids make a better future for themselves, their families, and their country.
