After years of persuasion from Aunt Al to do a marathon; the fact that my sister has run two before; that I go and watch the marathon every year and think ‘maybe I could do that’ and finally that I’m an Iron Man widow until July… I have decided to do the London Marathon this year.

I would be delighted if you could sponsor me to run the marathon. Your sponsors will help motivate me to get out into the cold and dark of the winter and get the miles ticking over. If you don’t fancy sponsoring me, there are alternatives:

1) My sister Julia who is making her marathon comeback following child birth and somehow has to fit in training with looking after Thomas, or

2) Aunt Al who has done eight marathons before but with this one comes the lure of pushing into the top ten ranking for her age group (yes really) and the possibility of bettering her amazing 3 hour 36 minutes PB, or

3) The Iron Man himself, Rich, who has chosen to do the one event which makes a marathon look somewhat tame (swim: 2.4 miles, bike:112 miles, run 26.2 miles). He is doing the UK Ironman in Bolton in July.

All sponsorship of any of my nearest and dearest will go to Deafblind UK.

Of course a major motivation in me doing the marathon this year of all years is following the passing of my fantastic dad, Phil. Having a goal like the marathon will help all of us to get through the training and we know that my dad would have been very proud of our efforts. You may be wondering why I’m not running for a charity which is more in keeping with his memory. Well, we (Julia and Aunt Al) have a bit of family history in running for Deafblind UK and we’ve got to know the fantastic work that this relatively small and less known charity do. The work that Deafblind UK do in providing help at home, communication and mobility support, counselling and the provision of special equipment to people with deaf blindness is invaluable.
