Green Chain Marathon, London · 20 September 2009

Founded in 1984, we're the UK charity for all affected by adrenal insufficiency, including Addison's disease. Every donation helps us raise awareness, improve adrenal crisis care and save lives. All donations go to our 'unrestricted' funds, to help us in this vital work.

Story

On Sunday 20th September I ran my first ever marathon – yes that’s 26.2 amazing/gruelling/idiotic/challenging (depending on your point of view!) miles.

Well I did it, 27.5 miles due to getting lost a bit and took a rather gruelling 5 hrs 25 mins. Lots of hilly but lovely wooded bits and the course organiser's obviously decided we should see a variety of sites, ran along the Thames, past a sewerage works, and also a moated palace. Never knew there were so many woods in the capital. My personal cheering team of Steve, Nic & Paul kept my spirits up by encouraging me on at mile 22 and at the end. So would I do another marathon? Well ask me when I've forgotten the pain of this one.... Better go, I have a blister the size of a small egg to deal with.

A massive thank you to all who have sponsored me, encouraged me and generally cheered me on, you've been brilliant. :)

As it’s my first one I’d like to raise a bit of money for a charity and decided to support the Addisons Disease Self-Help Group. Addisons is a life-threatening condition caused by the failure of the adrenal glands which means you need to take steroid replacements for life. JFK is the most frequently cited Addisonian, and they also think that Jane Austen may have had it too.

My husband, Steve, has Addisons disease and the group have been great in helping us to understand and manage it. They are really small group but they do a lot with the few resources they have.  Have a look at their website if you’re interested: http://www.addisons.org.uk/

 I’m hoping to raise £600, so it would be great if you can help me reach that, however small the amount you can give. :)  Here's some info on what your money could help them to do;

£2 would cover the cost of a mailout of Addison's Disease literature to a GP practice.

£20 would contribute towards the annual costs of maintaining the ADSHG website and server hosting, enabling people who have just been diagnosed with Addison's to find out about how to manage their condition.

£50 would cover the print cost of distributing a leaflet at a medical conference.  (ADSHG currently run displays at three endocrine conferences a year,and would really like to get to some ambulance conferences too).

£100 would cover print costs for a conference display screen (excluding design).
