Story

Thanks for visiting Annabella's donations page.  We have chosen to ask for donations to Kids Kidney Research as Annabella's christening gift.  We have chosen this charity because of the diagnosis Bella received of having a duplex kidney.

Annabella was diagnosed antenatally at 20 weeks.  We were referred to a specialist in Nottingham for a series of scans throughout the pregnancy.  When Annabella was 2 weeks old we took her to Lincoln hospital for an ultrasound, this revealed that the diagnosis at 20 weeks had been correct and she did have a duplex kidney. (This means that her kidney has an extra part on it that also works like the rest of the kidney.  This means that more fluid is leaving the kidney, putting more pressure on the tube that leads to the bladder.)

The week following the scan we took Annabella for an x-ray at the hospital.  This was to check that fluid was not travelling the wrong way back up the expanded tube (ureter) from the bladder into the kidney.  Luckily this was not the case and therefore the duplex kidney was not a serious problem.  We do still need to go for more tests because of a possible mild blockage in the extra section of the duplex kidney, but the doctor assures us that if this is present, it is very mild and should not cause any problems.

So that has been our experience of the worrying time when you are unsure about how healthy your child is.  It is a terrible time to go through.  Thank goodness, our daughter did not receive a serious diagnosis.  There are however, children and families who do suffer and that is why we have chosen to donate to Kids Kidney Research, so that more can be done to help them.
