In August this year I received a challenge from work to take part in the Myeloma UK London Paris Ride 2016 to raise money to advance myeloma research. I decided it was my time to take up the challenge and give something back to help others. Everyone will be affected by cancer at some stage in their lives, whether personally or a close friend/family member. I want to play my part in joining the fight to put an end to the loss and suffering.
Myeloma, also known as multiple myeloma, is a cancer arising from the plasma cells. There are approximately 4,800 people diagnosed with myeloma every year in the UK. It is the second most common form of bone marrow cancer, but only represents 1% of all cancers. Improvements made to treatment over the last decade have meant that survival rates in myeloma are increasing at the fastest rate among all cancer types in the UK. Unfortunately whilst myeloma is highly treatable in the majority of cases, it is currently incurable. This means that even after successful treatment has given patients a period of remission or stable disease, their myeloma will return.
The Myeloma UK London Paris Ride 2016 is a 500km four day ride described as the ‘Ultimate Pro-Rider Experience’. Personally having no experience, other than a leisurely bike ride with my children, this is going to be a huge challenge.
Please help me raise funds for Myeloma UK to support them to accelerate the discovery and development of effective treatments and, ultimately, to find a cure for myeloma. Your support, in a variety of ways, will help make this possible. You can help make myeloma history.
