Big Walk 2018 · 22 June 2018 ·
Thanks for visiting our Big Walk 2018 Just Giving page in support of the Sheffield Scanner. On 22nd June we will be taking part in a 26.2 mile marathon-distance Peak District walking challenge, starting in Lodge Moor on the edge of Sheffield, heading out to the Peak District and ending on the University campus.
Why are we doing this? 20 years ago, on the 17th June 1998, our family was devastated when at the age of 40, Anne was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer. We will forever be thankful for the excellent care and treatment Anne received at the Royal Hallamshire and Weston Park Hospitals, which set her on the road to recovery and gave our family a future to look forward to together. We have always loved walking in the Peak District and 20 years on, we are grateful and privileged to undertake this challenge to help keep Sheffield at the forefront of diagnostic technology.
We're raising funds towards the University's £2 million fundraising campaign for the Sheffield Scanner - a ground-breaking MRI-PET scanner facility, and the first of its kind in Yorkshire. This scanner represents the next leap forward in medical and imaging research and will have a crucial role for research and patients in many areas of medicine, including cancer, neurodegenerative diseases such as Motor Neurone Disease, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s, heart disease, diabetes and stroke.
