Story
In 2000 Julie was first diagnosed with Breast Cancer and following a mastectomy has enjoyed 12 cancer free years. In March 2012 however, this unpredictable disease made an unwelcome return in the form of metastases to the bone.
Julie was immediately referred to Velindre Cancer Centre and is receiving fantastic care and treatment from one of their remarkable teams.
Velindre Cancer Centre is well known for being the largest non-surgical cancer Hospital in Wales, providing Radiotherapy, Chemotherapy and other specialised treatments. It is not so well known that Velindre Cancer Centre also manages an active, extensive and award winning programme of research into a wide variety of cancers. Our aim is to raise valuable funding to help support vital research to help future generations.
With luck Julie should be in remission by the end of February 2013 and in recognition of the wonderful work and research undertaken by Velindre she, together with her friends, Kate, Heather and Anne, have decided to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. They aim to raise valuable funding for the Breast Cancer Research Fund at Velindre Cancer Centre which is managed by Professor Peter Barrett-Lee. He heads a team of clinical and surgical research fellows which is currently researching why some breast cancer cells become resistant to anti-oestrogen therapy and understanding the mechanisms by which the cells become resistant. Anti-oestrogen is a very effective method of treatment for some patients and the Team want to understand why some patients become resistant to this treatment.
