At Alzheimer’s Society we’re working towards a world where dementia no longer devastates lives. We do this by giving help to those living with dementia today, and providing hope for the future by campaigning to make dementia the priority it should be and funding groundbreaking research.

I am doing a nine mile walk on Easter Saturday, 19th April 2014. I'm doing this walk with a group of people from my daughters place of work which is our local Co-operative as they have chosen Alzheimer's this year to raise much needed funds for this very worthy cause.

Dementia is very close to my heart as both my Father and Father in Law suffered with it and are sadly no longer with us. My Mother in Law too now suffers from Vascular Dementia!

My Dad had a severe stroke back in 2001 and consequently suffered from dementia in later years. He was such a lovely kind person and a lovely father to his four daughters. I'm the eldest. He became poorly in August 2010 and ended up in hospital for three months. He sadly died on 13th November, 2010.

My Father in Law suffered from Alzheimer's and he too has died. My Mother in Law also suffers from dementia. She is now in a nursing home in Alnwick.

Both George (father in law) and Margaret (mother in law) came to live with us in 2010. Life has been very difficult. George could never understand why he had to live here with us as he thought he should be at home looking after Margaret. He could be very violent and hit out at us on quite a few occasions. He ended up having to be sectioned and then ended up being cared for in a care home where he sadly died sixteen months ago. Margaret suffered a severe stroke just over two years ago. We battled on to look after her as she became more and more dependent on us. It became very hard for us to cope on a daily basis and we had to rely on frequent respite in a local care home. Unfortunately last year while in the care home Margaret fell and ended up in hospital. Since then she has been unable to weight bear and had to move into a nursing home. Life has become easier for us as a family but her daily battle with dementia just gets worse. Thankfully for now she still knows who we all are and is always pleased to see us. She does get very confused and it's so sad to think that she'll never be able to come 'home'!

This is why I want to do this walk and help with fund raising to make people more aware of this awful disease that just doesn't affect the person but the whole family.
