Story
Grove Cottage provides social and educational activities for people with learning disability: to develop their potential, avoid social isolation by supporting lifelong friendships and to provide respite for their families
Grove Cottage provides social activities suitable for every age group. Children can start in the Saturday Club at three years old and transfer to an older Saturday group around nine years of age. At fourteen they are able to join the Tuesday evening Youth Club and when they are ready join the adult clubs which meet on Wednesday and Thursday evenings. Our hope is that as they pass from childhood to adulthood they will maintain a strong network of friends that will minimise the risk of social isolation.
Bishop's Stortford Mencap owns Grove Cottage and so in addition to the cost of running the activities it has all the costs of owning and maintaining a building.
The services provided for young children are particularly expensive. The Special Needs Nursery provides one-to-one care as well as weekly swimming and fortnightly music sessions. Speech Therapy is very beneficial to children with learning disability but is costly. Although parents make a contribution, these services are provided well below their cost.
The ability of Grove Cottage to provide lifelong social activities and specialist supoport for young children is only possibe because of support from the local community.
