In a moment of madness I have signed up to a 20 day charity trek through Nepal to Everest Base Camp and a nearby peak, Kala Pattar (18,514 feet, 50% of sea-level atmospheric oxygen). It will be a great opportunity for me to push myself beyond my fitness horizons (typically limited to 18 holes of golf!).

As some of you will know the National Autistic Society’s cause is particularly important to my wife Sarah and I. Our four wonderful children are a huge inspiration and motivation to us. As the going gets tougher in the final stages of the trail, I will be thinking about the physical and mental adversity our twins and many others with autism have to battle with on a daily basis. I hope I can do them proud whilst also raising significant funds for those who are less fortunate.

Your donations can make a real difference to the lives of people affected by autism so please give generously for this very worthy cause. I will be funding my own costs for the trip and you can rest assured that your donations will go directly to the National Autistic Society. It also affects how they make sense of the world around them. It is a spectrum condition, which means that, while all people with autism share certain difficulties, their condition will affect them in different ways. Some people with autism are able to live relatively independent lives but others may have accompanying learning disabilities and need a lifetime of specialist support. People with autism may also experience over- or under-sensitivity to sounds, touch, tastes, smells, light or colours.

Asperger syndrome is a form of autism. People with Asperger syndrome are often of average or above average intelligence. They have fewer problems with speech but may still have difficulties with understanding and processing language.

The National Autistic Society is the UK's leading charity for people with autism and their families. Founded in 1962, it continues to spearhead national and international initiatives and provide a strong voice for all people with autism.
