Thank you so much for finding a little more from the bottom of the charity pot to sponsor me for the Spires and Steeples Challenge on Sunday 16th October.
A big thank you goes to my walking partner, John Rouse, our next door neighbour, who so kindly accompanied me on the 26 mile walk from Lincoln to Sleaford along the Spires & Steeples Arts and Heritage Trail which I did in aid of the Elizabeth Coteman Fund (ecfund.org).
We left Lincoln Castle at 8.30 am and arrived at Sleaford at 5.40. The weather was perfect most of the way - a slight breeze and an autumn sunshine. The first half of the walk was interesting and the villages were picturesque but on the second half, much of the way was going across winter grain and rape fields reminding us of our own training terrain - a little boring especially as fatigue was setting in. Unfortunately not photographic scenery either.
Thanks again to John who kindly spent days doing 4/5 hour walks with me and on the day did the pacemaking for the last 13 miles as well as giving me a hand to get me over all the styles.
Thanks also to Linda for transporting us to Lincoln and picking us up at Sleaford and to Maggie Rouse for treating us to a Macdonalds at the end of the day.
Just to remind you what you so kindly sponsored me for:
The Elizabeth Coteman fund offers small grants direct to sufferers and families and to small groups working to support cancer sufferers and families; to also support the development of research into Pancreatic Cancer.
Pancreatic Cancer has some of the worst statistics by comparison with other forms of cancer
· 40 years ago few children survived childhood leukaemia – now the survival rate is 80%
· 40 years ago only 46% of women diagnosed with breast cancer survived five years or more – now that figure is also 80%
· 40 years ago 3% of people diagnosed with pancreatic cancer survived five years or more – that figure is still 3%!
· The average survival time after diagnosis is 6 months
· Profile for, and research into, the disease are both at extremely low levels
· Diagnosis must be improved – there is currently no early detection test and treatment is limited.
Thank you once again for your support.
