The University of Greenwich provides opportunities and support for all those who wish to pursue a university education, many of whom are traditionally underrepresented in the sector.

Story

Chris Baker is a chaplain to Greenwich University and is sailing singlehanded around the UK coast as a charitable endeavour and as a personal challenge. Later he hopes to sail single-handed, non-stop around the Globe.

I will be starting from Greenwich University Campus on Monday 5th July 0900hrs, site of the Old Royal Naval College.

During the trip, I will be keeping you updated and will be stopping for rest, supplies and to make repairs. .  It will take six weeks with a week’s rest in Scotland.

I am raising money for Greenwich Alumni as I see the welfare needs of students and their aspirations daily.  A little assistance can help them stay on their chosen course or a small bursary or emergency loan can change the direction of their life. When you see that person walk up the platform to receive their degree it demonstrates their determination and aspirations.    I meet students training to be nurses, teachers, architects, scientists and engineers with many family commitments striving to contribute to society and all they want is to succeed.

I am travelling 1500nm and calling this 'Around the Coast 2010' ©  £1 is for every nautical mile

The route is now anti-clockwise and stops will include ports along the East Coast of England; Norfolk, North to Whitby, Holy Island, across the Firth and North to Inverness where I join the Caledonian Canal for 60mile to Fort William. On the West Coast of Scotland, I sail South, past the Mull of Kintyre and onto the Isle of Man. Continuing to South Wales and then across the Severn Estuary, stopping at Lundy, onto Devon and Cornwall. Around Lands End and along the South Coast using the Summer South Westerly’s behind me.  Staying south of the Isle of White and up the coast to Dover and finally entering the Thames Estuary.  Ending at Greenwich University, Greenwich or maybe Medway Campus dependent on time.
