Coylum Charity Challenge · 1 June 2012

Prostate Scotland aims to inform, support, campaign and advance on prostate disease in Scotland. We raise awareness and provide information about prostate cancer and disease and its treatments. We also promote research and treatment developments on prostate issues across Scotland.

Story

Job done - and what fun we had!

Well we achieved our Challenge over 24 hours and were so lucky with the weather as you can see from the pictures. Our thanks to everyone who donated to our charities. Even more thanks to our support team who with the help of David Frew from Mar Lodge got our overnight camp to Luibeg Burn at the south end of the Lairig Ghru, 8k from the nearest road. They had great fun with Thor, Marmalade (renamed affectionately) & lifted our spirits even further than the trek and great weather had with food, drams & great crack. We finished off the day with a BBQ and thanks to our friends & family for all their help and what a great evening we all had.

Our Aim

We are a group of hillwalking friends that would like to raise some money for a group of charities that have touched the lives of either ourselves, friends or family.

Our Charities

Prostate Cancer Scotland, Strathcarron Hospice, Cystic Fibrosis Trust, 500 miles & Chest, Heart & Stroke Scotland & Breast Cancer Care

Our Challenge

To climb 7 of the Cairngorm MunrosCairngorm, Ben Macdui, Carn a’Mhaim, The Devil’s Point, Cairn Toul and Braeriach and their 9 tops

Our Plan

To leave at noon on Friday 1st June and climb to the Cairngorm plateau reaching our first top Cnap Coire na Spreidhe before Cairngorm itself. From there round the northern corries and the tops of Stob Coire an-t Sneachda and Cairn Lochan before taking in Lurchers Crag overlooking the Lairig Ghru. We then plan to walk across the plateau to Carn Etchachan then over the north top at 1295m and up onto Macdui. Heading south via Sron Riach to Carn a’Mhain before descending to the river Dee at the southern end of the Lairig Ghru to meet our support team around 8pm for an evening meal and a sleep.

Up at dawn on Saturday 2nd June for the 2 half of our challenge. Ascend Choire Odhair onto the col turning south east to take in Devil’s Point before returning to our next top Stob Coire an t-Saighdeir before reaching Cairn Toul. Next comes Angel’s Peak and on round Coire Garbh to Carn na Criche, past the wells of Dee and onto Braeriach. We then descend to our next top Sron an Lairige before following the spine down to the Lairig Ghru and the path 12km back to Coylum. A magnificent 16 tops all over 1000m or 3000ft

Our Support

We are supported by a group of friends who will meet us at strategic points to provide sustenance and encouragement. At the south end of the Lairig Ghru they will set up a tented evening base camp with a welcoming evening meal. Their efforts on our behalf qualify them to raise sponsorship for the Coylum Charity Challenge.

Success

As this is a team effort success will be achieved if the majority of the team complete the course.
