Leeds Half Marathon 2018 · 13 May 2018 ·

Sue Ryder is here to make sure everyone approaching the end of their life or living with grief can get the support they need. There is no one size fits all when it comes to how we cope and the help we need, but with our support, no one has to face dying or grief alone. We are there when it matters.

Story

Unfortunately at the end of the summer of 2017, my Grandma, Caroline Ballard (nicknamed Pinky) lost her battle with cancer. She passed away at the Wheatfield’s hospice in Headingly, Leeds.

My family and I are running the Leeds Half Marathon during May 2018 in her memory. Team Pinky is made up of Caroline''s two daughters, Lisa & Nicola, their husbands Colin and David as well as three of her four grandchildren. The older grandchildren, Ashleigh, Jack and Tom will be running but the youngest , Emily, is just too young to compete. Last but not least , the partners of the two eldest grandchildren, Scott and Jocelyn will also be running. Her loving husband Peter , will be the team mascot for the day - not decided what to dress him up in yet - watch this space !

Caroline was the glue that held our family together. We can never put into words how much we love her and how there will forever be a gap in our lives. She was never a stereotypical Grandma; with her blonde bob hair-cut , stylish wardrobe and trendy make up stash, that her children and grandchildren would often borrow from.

Caroline loved to socialise, always the life and soul of the party , but I know that she treasured the times with her family the most. We are a close family and anticipated that we would have more years with her and that she would meet her first great grandchild in the summer. Unfortunately , her great granddaughter Grace Caroline , was born shortly after she passed away.

Caroline spent her last couple of weeks at the Sue Ryder Wheatfield’s Hospice in Headingly, Leeds. The hospice was fantastic and we cannot thank them enough for their support during such a difficult time. They were extremely accommodating and so friendly; they made us feel extremely at ease when visiting Caroline. Sue Ryder's Wheatfield Hospice helped create some immensely special and positive memories with Caroline in the last few weeks of her life. It was especially important to Caroline's daughters , Lisa and Nicola who practically set up a 'home from home' in the hospice to be close to their Mother.

This is not something that my family and I would normally put ourselves forward to do , as it will be a huge challenge for all of us , but the cause is more important than the short term pain we will endure ! It is the least we can do to thank the hospice for allowing us to create special memories with Caroline before she died. We will cherish those moments forever. Thank you Wheatfields!

We will be extremely grateful for all donations to the Sue Ryder Wheatfield’s Hospice in Memory of Caroline, Wife, Mother, Mother-in law , Grandmother and Great Grandmother extraordinaire as we run the Leeds Half Marathon for Wheatfield’s.

Thank you for all of your support.
