Atkins Grads Charity Challenge 2016 · 11 November 2016

RedR UK strengthens the capacity of agencies, aid workers and affected communities to prepare, respond, and recover from disaster. We enable effective, inclusive, and sustainable response to complex humanitarian crisis.

Story

RedR is a brilliant charity providing training and vital skills to people in disaster affected countries. Each year, Atkins graduates work together and fundraise through different activates across the UK to help those in need.

Our team ‘RedR5’, is very proud to be given the opportunity to help support this great charity, raise some money and most importantly, have some fun!

We are made of 7 graduates based in Euston Tower, Epsom, and Croydon:

  • Samuel Idehen
  • Husman Mahmood
  • Lawrence Holloway
  • Liam Grieve
  • Kevin Chiu
  • Eka Hintaran
  • Dillon Hirani

The average distance a person needs to walk in a developing country to get water is 6 km, carrying on average 10 kilos of water. To experience a similar situation as some people in developing countries, we will carry 10 litre jerry cans for 5 km around Regent's Park to raise awareness of water injustice around the world. Women and children in developing countries often carry more than 10 kg of water back to their villages. This is something members of Team 5 have not undertaken before and it is a great way to depict the courage, strength and resilience shown by people who have limited options for getting this much-needed resource.

In the UK, we are fortunate to have be able to turn on our taps every day and have a good water supply in our homes. However, according to the United Nations, 20% of the world’s population struggles to gain access to safe drinking water every day.

Did you know that if you leave the tap running whilst brushing your teeth, it wastes 6 litres of water per minute, so turning the tap off when brushing can save around 12-18 litres every time!

Your support will not only mean that we can directly support those suffering directly from water injustice in developing countries but will also ensure that the next generation do not have to suffer from the same injustice.
