The Bible Society in Northern Ireland has provided thousands of solar-powered digital Scripture players (MegaVoices) in countries from North Africa to the Arctic Circle where people were denied access to the Bible because of iliteracy and blindness. These were a great success because listeners could hear passages of Scripture being read in their own language and dialect. The MegaVoice player uses modern easy to use technology to allow listeners to access the securely stored message on three levels - Bible book, chapter and verse. The simple navigation panel allows scrolling forwards and backwards and the clear sound provides easy listening - if necessary, privately through an earpiece connector. The solar panel means that in the sunny conditions of North Africa, the player is fully charged by placing it in direct sunlight or even articficial light. Reindeer farmers in the Arctic winter were able to power their players by means of the light of their parafin lamps.
Now in 2007 BSNI is supporting the BIBLE SOCIETY IN CAMBODIA to provide similar MegaVoice players to young adults who are just starting to learn to read.
The 1,000 MegaVoice units will be used both in the class room setting as well as in individual literacy learning at home.
Each MegaVoice unit will contain all the audio materials (more than 30 audio tapes) used in the literacy training and it will also contain the entire New Testament in the Khmer language.This will not only give the opportunity to students to practice their reading skill after class, but also to listen to the Word of God at home in privacy, or as a family.
