Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Julia was a tiny baby I met first as a new born. She was delivered in Mandimba Health Centre, off to a poor start because her mother had advanced tuberculosis. She had 2 older sisters and 2 brothers, the oldest being 10. Julia's mother was too ill to breast feed. We were asked by the local doctor to help by suppling bottles and milk formula. I had to teach the 10 year old to mix the baby food.

Julia's mother died last October, leaving her at two months old. She has an elderly grandmother but the grandmother is ill and can hardly walk, so Julia's care was solely from her sisters who took turns in carrying her around on their back as they played. Unfortunately they too were hungry and ate her formula dipping their fingers in when they got a chance. In Julias little life she suffered chest infections, was hospitalised in Malawi on intravenous therapy when she was very dehydrated but often went untreated when her sisters did not recognise that she was ill. Medicines cost  about 1 pence per item but they have no money. Her top weight was 5.5kgs.

She died in my arms on June 13th 2011 aged 10 months. Her little life was painful with hunger, infections and skin rashes. But  her lovely big smile when she recognised me will stay with me forever.

She is one of many orphans being reared in child-headed households in this very poor part of Mozambique. We urgently need a fund to help these children. I do not want her death to be in vain. Please help us to give babies and children like these the support they need for food, vaccinations, medicines and essentials including school uniforms and writing materials. With some funds, we can appoint and train a local activist to visit regularly to monitor support them. We must break this cycle of poverty!
