Sony Ericsson Run to the Beat Half Marathon 2009 · 27 September 2009 ·

1 in 100 people have coeliac disease, yet only 36% are diagnosed. Coeliac UK empowers everyone affected, breaking down barriers, improving everyday life, offering trusted support and advancing research towards a cure. And we do it all so that one day, no one’s life will be limited by gluten.

Story

Hi there,

As most of you are aware, my youngest son Reuben has Coeliac disease, which is a Gluten intolerance.

I am running the Run To The Beat Greenwich half marathon on Sunday 27th September to raise money for the Coeliac UK charity which aims to promote awareness of the disease and also funds research.

The disease can be controlled via his diet. Effectively this means he can not eat any products containing wheat, barley or rye which as you can imagine is quite limiting.  Before being diagnosed, Reuben became very unwell with symptoms ranging from anemia, malnutrition, lack of energy, sleep problems, extreme grumpiness as well other health conditions.

Luckily for us, Reuben was diagnosed before it became really serious for him and is now leading a healthy and happy life.

I would be very grateful if you can contribute as much as you can for my fundraising effort, in the knowlegde that it is going to a worthwhile cause close to my heart.

If it helps, I am by no means a natural long distance runner and I will be suffering, alot!

Many thanks in advance

Barry
