Story
Hey everyone, thanks a million for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.
Living in London is a gift to anyone. From seeing West End shows to exploring East End markets, London has something for everyone. Living in London is also a gift for any student who wants to party hard, eat too much fried chicken, and sleep in till 2pm. But as I stumble home from a night out in Shoredtich I'm confronted by homeless people on every corner, down every alleyway, sleeping rough in -2 degree weather.
And then I find myself wondering: How does someone become homeless? Don’t they have a family? Friends? Someone who might look after them? Of course, the knowledge of a 19 year old student who’s grown up in the lap of luxury is limited. So we did some research:
- 5,678 people slept rough in London alone last year
- 39% of homeless people are under the age of 18.
- The average age a teen becomes homeless is 14.7 years
- On average, homeless people die at the age of 47
Surely this can't be right?
So what are we doing? Two, first year, Queen Mary Drama students, eager to raise awareness are directing one of the greatest plays ever written: The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde in attempt to raise money to fight homelessness in London.
If you've got a quid to spare, please consider donating to a great cause through our event.
And if you're really keen, come enjoy a glass of pimms or a cucumber sandwich and meet the guys and girls of Chelsea in our rehashed version of The Importance of Being Earnest.
Playing at The Pinter Studio, Arts One building, Queen Mary of London on the 25th of May at 7:30!
Thanks everyone and break a leg to our oustanding cast.
Pictures coming soon of our rehearsals
