Story

Thanks for taking the time to look at my page.

On October 21st 2012 my mate Kev set out to run the Birmingham Half Marathon.

The night before the race I texted him to wish him luck and he replied to tell me that he had put a beef rib in the fridge for his celebration dinner the next day along with a bottle of Aussie Shiraz.

On the morning of the race he posted his half marathon playlist on his Facebook page, full of absolutely appalling music choices (Kev had the worst taste in music of anyone I ever met) along with a photo of his running shirt and race number for those of us who were watching out for him on the Channel 5 coverage.

On Sunday afternoon I dropped him another text to ask him how he got on. I never got a response to that text message. Shortly afterwards one of my other friends called me to tell me that Kev had collapsed at the finish line and that, despite the efforts of the medical team to resuscitate him, he was gone.

Kev was 36 years old. He was fit and healthy. He had no history of heart issues, but for whatever reason his heart just stopped.

Kev was the guy who organised the test match tickets every year; the guy who made sure that everyone he knew attended at least one BBQ at his house each summer; the guy who made sure that our regular boys' cards nights continued when parenthood started putting pressure on more and more of the boys' leisure time. Then just like that, he was gone.

12 months on, I am joining a number of Kev's many friends and family members to remember Kev and raise money for Cardiac Risk in the Young by running this year's Birmingham Half. I'm not a runner. None of us are runners, but all of us wanted to do something to remember Kev and to take something positive out of the tragedy of his death.
