Samaritans
Samaritans is a national charity which aims to benefit society by improving people’s emotional health in order to create a greater sense of well being. Apart from being a 24-hour source of support on the telephone, by email, letter or face to face. Samaritans also works in the local community, for example working in prisons and schools.
Oxford Samaritans
Oxford Samaritans was established in 1963. We have over 100 listening volunteers in the Branch who are unpaid and come from all walks of life and are of all ages. All are people who give up around twenty hours a month to be available to callers and to provide confidential, emotional support to people who are experiencing feelings of distress or despair; including those which may lead to suicide.
We are open 24 hours a day and every day of the year and despite snow and the challenges of providing continuous cover pride ourselves on being one of the few Branches who have never had to close in recent years.
We are totally dependent on raising funds each year to keep the Branch running to cover such costs as telephones, heating and lighting. The Marathon represents an important fundraising opportunity for us and we hope you will give generously in supporting the runners who are taking part this year for us in the Virgin London Marathon.
