Story

WE DID IT!!!!!!!!

One Heart One Wheel

140 Miles coast to coast. Whitehave, Lancashire to Robin Roker Pier, Sunderland.

23-27 August 2010

On a unicycle.

This summer my mate Ade and I will be joining about 20 other unicyclists, from novice to expert, to tackle a leg aching trek from one side of england to the other on the Sustrans Coast to Coast cycle path. We will be attempting 30 miles a day, up hill and down dale for 4 or 5 days.

Your support will make us peddle harder as well as raise money for the British Heart Foundation.

You can donate the traditional way too if you'd prefer, just drop me a line and i'll zip round with a sponsorship form.

UPDATES:

3/06/10

After 8 weeks of training and a couple of hundred miles clocked up on my 24" unicycle i finally got the bigger 29" wheel I'll be riding for the event itself. And it's gooooood :-) Faster, smoother and more importantly covers more distance per pedal - my knees are thanking me already!

3 Months to go and it's starting to feel really real! Thanks for all the donations, spread the word.

Training has been going great, especially since we both now have large wheeled unicycles (29") more suited to distance and speed, these things really eat up the miles compared to my 24" uni. I am presently trying to figure out how to fix a Magura HS33 brake to the frame to take the strain off my knees for the downhill joys of the Lake District and Pennines! We've been happily pushing 15 to 20 miles but need to keep upping it to reach the 30-35 miles we'll be covering daily to complete the trip in good time. Our team is now looking at between 9-15 unicyclists from all over the UK, with back-up from a minibus full of spares and supplies and a few moutain bikers to egg us on.

WoooHoo! Fitted brake to unicycle this morning. Going to make the downhill sections less painful and scary :-)

4/7/10

PHEEW!! Did the BHF Gower Bike Ride today, 29 miles through town and country. A bit of a last minute decision (the night before) so it was just for fun rather than raiding money. Did it in a chilled 4 hours and felt fine afterwards i.e. was still able to walk!!

Suprised myself by overtaking quite a few 2 wheelers, uphill too :-) But envious of them as they whizzed past on the downhill sections :-( Very pleased to have the brake fitted though, my knees are taking less of a beating gowing downhill now :-)

Feeling great about tackling 30-35 miles a day, although the hills aren't anywhere near as gruelling as the Lake District.

Not long to go....

Just over a month to go! Excited and a little nervous now, training going well and eating up the miles faster and faster. Unicycle is doing wonders for my back and posture too. Unicycle therapy! Result.

Thanks to everyone who has donated, you're all fab!

Here we go, less than a month!! Sponsorships are really rolling in now! Have even got some support from a few local businesses to cover costs of campsites, padded shorts and waterproofs.

Training has kicked up a gear, spending as much time in the gym as i am on the unicycle (no-one told me you could grow muscles on your shins!!)

Been getting a decent amont of local newspaper coverage this week in the Llanelli Star , Swansea Evening Post and the Ceredigion Cambrian News, http://www.thisissouthwales.co.uk/news/Getting-balance-right-BHF-funds-challenge/article-2460303-detail/article.html

And we have a few interviews lined up over the next couple of weeks for Swansea Wave and S4C :-)

Thankyou everyone :-)

WOW! Only 2 weeks to go :-) Have been hitting the gym hard and been on a mega publicity and fundraising campaign stiltwalking at local events and doing cisrus workshops to raise profile and much needed funds to cover costs (food, camping, getting there and back) and everyone has been fantastically generous. A lot of support from friends and family too, with offers of ride support, setting up finish lines, making flags, putting up tents and spreading the word. MASSIVE THANKYOU guys.

On a slightly less bouyant note, one of the reasons we've had to go on a cost-covering fundraising mission is that some of the sponsors (who were provinding transport, backup, water, spares and more) have pulled out because the number of riders has dropped from a massive 29 to a hardcore of 8. This also means that we've had to shorten the route by about 20 miles, we're still doing the same route but will be STarting in Whitehaven, not St Bees, and finishing at Roker Pier, not Robin Hood's Bay. This is still a massive challenge for me and the hills won't be any less forgiving! And no doubt i'll probably get lost and end up doing at least an extra 20 miles trying to get back on track!!

Thanks again for all your support :-)
