Bernie did this run last October and is taking a second bite of a cherry that is a ten mile run around Portsmouth. Not as daunting as the 26.2 miles of a marathon or the cliff walks but still very hard work for a 61 year old like Bernie.Last year he took 2 hours 4 minutes 42 seconds so his target in 2009 will be 1 hour 59 minutes 59 seconds – which will be tough as 4 minutes or so for him represents 400 / 500 yards !
He is running in support of ALD Life, a charity founded to help those with ALD - Adrenoleukodystrophy which is a rare neurological disorder which affects mainly young boys and is frequently fatal.
It was featured some years ago in the film Lorenzo's Oil which many people will have seen. It is about an American boy called Lorenzo who contracted ALD and whose father devised with the help of Doctors a special oil which can be taken as part of a diet and which is thought to give some help, but is still unproven.
There have been fatal cases in Guernsey over the years. There is also a milder adult version called AMN - Adrenomyeloneuropathy with local sufferers including a friend of mine.
Both conditions are incurable but research is going on in UK, USA and elsewhere and funds are always needed. The website www.aldlife.org gives more information for anyone interested.
This is why Bernie has decided to do this run in support of his dear friend.
