Story
Thank you for taking the time to look at my page.
As you all know in February 2012 we were blessed with the birth of our precious little tiny baby girl Maya. She entered our lives 5 weeks early and took our breath away. From the beginning she was a fighter and amazed Drs by only having to stay in neonatel care for 24hrs. Once home we started enjoying the joys of parenthood including sleepless nights and being stuck knee high in dirty nappies. Maya was the perfect baby and made the transition to parenthood very easy, in fact a little too easy as all she did was sleep.
This soon became a concern for us and at her routine 12 week check up the Dr implied there could be an underlying cause for this. We were referred to our local hospital for scans and it was then we discovered that Maya was suffering from a rare condition called Craniosyntosis. This meant a part of Maya's skull had fused too soon and therefore not allowing her brain to develop normally.
We were immediately referred to Great Ormond Street and saw a neurosurgeon who went through our options. We then had to make one of the hardest decisions we have ever made, to put our 6 month old baby through a gruelling operation in which her skull would be cut and reopened and the insertion of 2 springs which over time would stretch open the skull. Within days of us seeing the consultant Maya had her operation and the level of care she recieved at GOSH truely humbled us.
On Christmas eve 2012 we revisited GOSH in order for Maya to have operation number 2 - removal of the springs. Again we could not fault the service and care that Maya and ourselves recieved.
Thanks to everyone at GOSH we now have a healthy and happy baby who is making amazing progress. Due to the early detection and intervation taken Maya will now lead a normal and healthy life. We are forever indebited to the staff at GOSH and in particular her neurosurgeon Dr Jeelani who pioneered the surgery she had.
Now onto the fundraising bit... we wanted a challenge and what could be more challenging than 2 novice runners..A half marathon! I have no idea what we have let ourselves in for but we have 9months to train for it! Please donate to this charity... every penny counts!
