Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit the Big Sunday JustGiving page.
Big Sunday was the brainchild of local businessman Bob Burrows, as a way of raising money for local charities. Motivation for this event came about after a friend of the family was diagnosed with breast cancer. In it’s first year money for Exeter based cancer care unit charity ‘Force’ was raised, and then ‘George’s First Steps’ last year, helping to send local Braunton boy, George Palmer, off to America for a life changing operation. George has since been to America, and is doing really well.
Bob, owner of VW restoration company Resto-Haus and Mr. Bo Jangles VW Wedding Hire, has been continuously inspired by the strength of those affected by cancer, and this year is no exception. Whilst attending Split Screen Van Club’s AGM, Bob met up with fellow VW devotee’s Laurie and Lynn. During a conversation Bob discovered Laurie had recently been diagnosed with an aggressive strain of cancer, ‘Lymphoma’. Bob asked Laurie, if he could raise money from this year’s event for a charity that would care for Laurie during his treatment and of course many others and Laurie chose the ‘Lymphoma Research Trust’. This charity does not receive any government funding, however undertakes research to improve the life expectancy and quality of life for patients with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.
Big Sunday is due to take place over the August Bank Holiday weekend, with camping over three nights at Hidden Valley Camping & Caravan Park. There will be the spectacular VW Cruise through Braunton, Saunton and Croyde, Show & Shine, local music and bands, children’s entertainment and face painting. The team are hoping to outdo the previous two years in terms of weather and money raised.
Bob commented, “It is through my passion for Volkswagen’s that I have met many great friends, some of which have been diagnosed with cancer. I had long wanted to put on a gathering of Volkswagens in North Devon, so I thought why not combine the two and raise money for charities that help with the fight against this horrible disease!”
