My story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I plan to make a ‘Big Splash’ in the Little Ouse river, which runs through Knettishall, on Saturday 28 January 2012 at 12 noon to raise funds for Suffolk Wildlife Trust’s appeal to secure Knettishall Heath for wildlife and people; making it a nature reserve. I am delighted that Suffolk County Council is gifting the Trust some stunning meadows too.

We have just been told that the Trust has been awarded its biggest ever grant by the Heritage Lottery Fund of £720,000. But as a condition of the grant, the Trust now has four weeks – until the end of January - to raise a further £100,000 to complete the purchase and secure the site’s future as a haven for wildlife and people.

My aim is to raise at least £1,500 – your challenge is to keep me in the icy winter water for as long as possible. So, for every £250 raised towards my target I will stay immersed in the river for five seconds. To get things rolling I’ve already pledged £250 towards the appeal.

Knettishall Heath is of significant benefit to the people of West Suffolk and beyond. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for Suffolk Wildlife Trust to buy such a substantial piece of nationally important Breckland heath and the largest land purchase in their history. There are over 12, 500 different species living in the Brecks, and of these, almost 30% are nationally rare.

By the way it will be great to have some company so feel free to join me on my winter dip on the 28 January – perhaps to help push me in the river! Or even better please consider setting up your own fundraising page for the appeal and coming for a wild swim. Roger Deakin, Suffolk’s great naturalist (and the author of Waterlog), went wild-swimming in the Little Ouse.
