Bilbao to Faro · 11 December 2008

DEBRA is the national charity that supports individuals and families affected by Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) – a painful genetic skin blistering condition which, in the worst cases, can be fatal. We fund pioneering research and provide care and support to individuals and families living with EB.

Story

This summer Theo (17), Billy (17), Matt (16) and Harry (17) shall all be hopping on the saddle and pushing ourselves to the extreme as we cycle across the whole of  Spain: North to South in 2 weeks. Our route will take us from Bilbao on the North Coast of Spain to Faro on the South Coast of Portugal, clocking up roughly 800 miles in total. Although many people are unaware of this, Spain is actually the most mountainous country in Europe, on top of this during the first two weeks of July temperatures in the centre of Spain soar to over 40°C. It’s not going to be easy.

DebRA is a charity very close to all of our hearts. It is the national charity working on behalf of people with the genetic skin blistering condition Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB). We thoroughly recommend that you look at their website (www.debra.org.uk).

We are hoping to raise £10,000 which is enough to provide support for 10 children with EB, providing a range of equipment, such as special bed linen, adapted buggies, food blenders, specialist footwear and many more items to bring comfort and relief.

We are taking the ferry from Portsmouth to Bilbao, for which P&O have very kindly given us free tickets! The travel was going to be our main problem as far as costs go but thanks to them we don't have to worry. Hargroves cycles have also been very generous in donating some cycling kit to help us on our way.

We realise that everyone is experiencing tough times with the credit crunch looming over us all however no one is feeling this pain more than the charities. Donations have fallen to new lows and people who really need help will no longer be able to get as much as they require.

We would like to make it clear that 100% of your donation will go directly to DebRA as we are intending to cover our own costs.

With this in mind if you have anything that you would be willing to give it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much,

Harry, Billy, Theo, Matt

P.S. After we have completed this trip we will put on an evening to show various photos and tell our stories. Watch this space!
