Story

Boarding for Bipolar: Charity Skate from London to Brighton

                                Saturday 20 August 2011

Some people you may know who have had this illness.....

Adam Ant, Russell Brand, Frank Bruno, Kurt Cobain, Richard Dreyfuss, Stephen Fry, Paul Gascoigne, Ernest Hemingway, Jack London, Kerry Katona, Spike Milligan, Bill Oddie, Gail Porter, Rene Rivkin, Vincent Van Gough, Ruby Wax, Jeremy Kemp, Winston Churchill.

London-based skaters will be destined for Brighton on Saturday 20 August 2011 as they take part in the fundraising event: 'Boarding for Bipolar'. On their epic skate to the seaside - covering over 48 miles of ground - boarders hope to raise awareness of the widely misunderstood condition of Bipolar, with all proceeds going to the 'MDF The Bipolar Organisation'.

The skate starts at 8am on Saturday 20 August, at Clapham Common, with participants aiming to reach the shores of Brighton by 8pm that evening. Support vehicles and cyclists will accompany the boarders en-route, whilst a film-crew will also be shooting a short documentary on their journey - headed by chief-organiser and Bipolar sufferer, Mark Tulloch.

Public awareness of Bipolar is beginning to increase thanks to prominent figures and sufferers, such as Stephen Fry and Catherine Zeta-Jones, speaking openly of their experiences. Yet as Mark explains "not only do the medical profession still struggle to understand this illness, but there is also a massive misconception in society about the realities of living with bipolar"

"I want to illustrate that sufferers of bipolar disorder, like me, can still lead a positive and fulfilling life. I manage a large business in South London with an annual turnover of just under £4 million, employing over 50 members of staff. Through my passion for boarding I would like to break down the myth that if you have bipolar you are 'crazy'."

The event has already gained support from the local community, businesses and boarders in the Clapham area, as well as the backing of Brighton based company APN A Public Nusiance and Australian boarding company Heelside. Mark and his team will be holding a 'meet and greet' BBQ at The Windmill in Clapham Common on 20th July 2011, from 7pm onwards, for those interested in participating in/supporting 'Boarding for Bipolar' and MDF The Bipolar Organisation.

As Mark commented: "We need as much support as possible to help raise money and change the common perception of Bipolar".
