3 mountains, 24 hours, 60 students and probably a lot of complaining.

The Challenge:

  Over the 9th-10th July this year I'll be taking part in the 3 Peaks Challenge with a group of Warwick students - essentially it means climbing the highest mountain in each of Scotland, England and Wales within 24 hours. And so I'm looking to you for help in raising money!

The Cause - Warwick in Africa:

   Last year I was lucky enough to travel to the Alexandra township in Johannesburg, South Africa as part of the Warwick in Africa scheme. I spent 6 weeks teaching maths full time to high school students in one of the most deprived parts of the city.

   The money raised is given to the student teachers on the scheme, with the money spent as they see fit. Examples may include calculators, pens, desks, whiteboards, revision guides - things that will help the students a lot. Importantly, every penny spent is fully accounted for!

   The pass mark for students taking their final exams (matrics) is little over 30% yet surprisingly many struggle to achieve this within Alexandra's schools. Just a little help with their education can make a huge difference to prospects of further education.

   Half-way through my time there last summer there was a national teacher strike in the run up to final exams. We therefore decided to use some money to set up our own voluntary school in a sports hall for students in the area, particularly final years. With around 200 attending each day it was a great success.

  The scheme has expanded over the years to cover schools in Alexandra, Soweto, Stellenbosch and Limpopo in South Africa, as well as parts of Ghana and Tanzania. The focus is on teaching Maths, but English is being taught in Ghana. Groups of 12-16 Warwick students are sent to each area, with 2 or 3 students working together in a school. The students generally take on full responsibility for several classes iin the school, just like real teachers, with the aim of imparting new learning and teaching methods to the staff and pupils.
