The Grim Challenge '09 · 5 December 2009

The Wessex Neurological Centre serves a population of 3 million throughout central southern England & the Channel Islands. Having successfully raised £80,000 to provide a dedicated 'critical care' ambulance, and £145,000 to fund the creation of a Paediatric Video-Telemetry Suite (used to assess children with severe Epilepsy as to their suitability for life-changing corrective surgery), our latest appeal aims to raise a further £200,000 for our most ambitious project to date - the Fluorescence Enhanced Neurosurgery Appeal. Surgeons at the Centre perform vascular neurosurgery (to repair aneurysms, haemorrhages and the like), on hundreds of patients each year. By equipping one of the Centre's operating theatres with a new, state-of-the-art operating microscope fitted with the FL800 Fluorescence system, most of these patients will benefit. Fluorescence Enhanced Neurosurgery enables surgeons to clearly visualise blood-flow in adjacent brain tissue, reducing the possibility of either a recurrence of the bleed, or of a post-operative stroke. Story

On Saturday 5th December I shall be competing in the Grim Original '09 Challenge. This is an 8-mile run/wade/crawl over land that is used to test Army vehicles, so it is an 'interesting' challenge! After climbing and then descending a long hill shortly after the start, the course continues through a water filled ravine. I'll then have to run over puddle-strewn paths before having to crawl under camouflage netting and eventually reaching some man-made mounds and some more rather large 'puddles'. I'm expecting to get very wet, and very muddy! Then, after running on the fast vehicle driving circuit (where it is rocky underfoot) the course finishes with (just for good measure) some more large areas of water and mud.

As you can probably imagine, it's not called the Grim Challenge for nothing!

Anyway, if I'm going to put myself through this, I thought I should at least help to raise some money for charity, so please dig deep and sponsor me for whatever you can afford.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

Thank you for your support, it's greatly appreciated by me, and by my chosen charity.
