Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.
Meningitis is the acute inflammation of the protective membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord. This infection causes these membranes (the meninges) to become inflamed, which in some cases can damage the nerves and brain. The inflammation may be caused by infection with either a virus or bacteria and can be life threatening, especially if not treated quickly. Small children and young adults are at high risk, but all ages can be affected.
In 2013, 303,000 people died of Meningitis. Even if people survive this awful disease, it can still leave them disabled for live. Although cases of bacterial meningitis have halved in the last 25 years, there are around 3,200 new cases a year since 2000 and globally around 1,000 people die daily.

the charity was founded in 1989, they have awarded 140 research grants. The total
value of their investment in vital scientific research is over £17 million. Currently
