Nothing in life is to be feared. It is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less. - Marie Curie
Why am I taking Part in Race for Life?
In 2010 my 12 year old son was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia & my mother terminal lung cancer. Sadly my mother passed away but thanks to the research carried out & funded by Cancer Research today, after 3 years of chemotherapy, my son is a healthy, happy (albeit Arsenal fan) 17year old studying for his ALevels. Most of us have been touched in one way or another by cancer, sadly they now estimate that 1 in 2 of us will be directly affected by cancer.
Kalin had High Risk ALL and needed 3 years of chemotherapy, during this time he had many infections caused mainly by his Hickman Line which is used to deliver chemotherapy. The infections were life threatening but Kalin never gave up his fight, despite being in tremendous pain, experiencing severe lethargy, sickness and weight loss he continued his battle. Sadly he had to watch his nan pass away from lung cancer only 8 months after his own diagnosis, the day before her funeral he was rushed in to High Dependency with another life threatening infection.
No child should have to question their own mortality......... BUT
Kalin missed 2 1/2 years of school but managed to re-join his year group in time to sit his GCSE's passing all 10. He joined the Air Cadets where he found a love for flying and inspiration to study engineering specialising in Aerodynamics . He drove a Lamborghini, flew a Cessna, took part in aerobatics with an RAF pilot, went gliding, a fire fighting week with Herts Fire Brigade and experienced zero gravity at the Air Kix vertical wind tunnel.
Kalin has launched Race for Life for the last 3 years, raised money for Help for Heroes, achieved his Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award and is currently sitting his A2's in Sixth Form.
He is my inspiration - Can't you tell????
