Story

Hi everyone,

For those who know me well you've probably heard me speak about the desire to run the London Marathon at some point. Along with getting my degree it's been a long-term goal almost as long as I've lived in the city.

I guess I see it as a rite of passage to take part in something that showcases the city I love along with a sport I'm equally passionate about. It's an integral part of becoming a Londoner for me and participating in the collective endeavour. So aside from acheiving a personal best, putting myself through the arduous--some might say torturous--training to be up to the 26.2 mile challenge, there's another reason I'm running: to raise money for a charity I believe in. That's why I've chosen the YMCA, and that's why I've asked you to make a donation here.

Through the years, in both the US and UK, I've belonged to various YMCA gyms and have seen first hand the invaluable services they provide local communities. Without their facilities many innercity school kids wouldn't have a place for their sports clubs to meet and experience the rewarding benefits sport provides; not to mention the accommodation and guidance the YMCA provides for homeless young people on the streets and at risk.

Its ethos of helping disadvantaged children and families via education, advice, training and the encouragement of physical activity is fundamental to the wellbeing of our communities. Furthermore, the YMCA is committed to helping those at times of need regardless of race, gender, faith, background and circumstances. It provides the facilities and support for marginalised young people that many of us easily take for granted in our daily lives. Although most will know its name, this charity's more than just a song.
