Sheffield Poem-a-thon for Refugees and Asylum Seekers · 2 April 2016

ASSIST works with people in Sheffield who have been refused asylum in the UK. They are evicted from their Home Office accommodation and forced into destitution. We provide our clients with stable, dignified accommodation, regular financial support and a person-centred casework service.

Story

A Poem-a-thon - 60 poets reading in relay for 8 minutes each for a whole day - has been set up by a small group of Sheffield poets, led by Sally Goldsmith, to raise money for ASSIST Sheffield, an organisation that supports destitute refugees who have fled their home country in fear of persecution.

It will take place on Saturday 2 April 2016 at the Art House in Backfields in the city centre. There will be a cafe at the venue, entry is free and there will be a bookstall, a tombola with great prizes, tea, coffee and cakes. Any cash raised through sales on the day will go to charities supporting refugees in Northern France. Please come to the event any time between 10am and 6pm to hear amazing poetry and to support this important cause. My slot starts at 2pm.

Please sponsor me or any of the other poets in the team to help us do our bit to make a difference. Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity. So it’s the most efficient way to donate – saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
