Thank you for visiting my JustGiving page. I am raising money to help with research, training and management of Buruli ulcer in Ghana. This is an infection which causes terrible skin ulcers in children living in poor rural areas. Working with the World Health Organisation we have developed effective antibiotic treatment but it has to be given daily for eight weeks by injection, requiring trained staffed in the villages and careful supervision by doctors. The Ghanaian doctors are doing research with me to develop better treatment which can be given for shorter periods and this requires detailed monitoring. It costs about £20,000 to set up a new treatment centre and £10,000 a year to run each one.

Last year, thanks to your contributions, we raised £10,000 and with the help of the WHO, a vehicle was bought for the team to travel 100 to 250 km from Kumasi to the treatment centres weekly. This was a great achievement but we need to get treatment to more patients.

Please continue to support us in raising money to help the hundreds of children and adults who develop Buruli ulcer every year in Ghana. Early treatment can prevent disfiguring scars, permanent disability and even amputations.

In 2008, Sue and I rowed in the Pairs Head of the River race on a beautiful day in October and we came 3rd in our group with a very respectable time of 14 minutes 22 secs. It was a wonderful experience and we aim to do even better this year.

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me; St. George's Hospital Charity will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you. So please help me to raise money to keep the treatment centres running. Many thanks for your support. For further information about Buruli ulcer please see : www.who.int/buruli/en/

So please dig deep and donate now.
