All,

I pen this e-mail disappointingly from home and not Vancouver as the unpronounceable Icelandic volcano has thwarted all my attempts at getting to the event.  Constrained by a military course, I couldn't travel with the main party who arrived and are making great progress on the mountain, however my travel date was the first day of the London flight cancellations and I have been unable to get there.  The challenge ends tomorrow and so with tonight's flight cancelled, there is now no chance of getting there, even for a day, and completing the challenge.

Very conscious that your generosity was linked to personal risk and effort on my behalf, acutely aware of the (legitimate) scope for banter and humour at my expence, but anxious that you should have a chance to re-assess your donation in light of my sedentary week in Berkshire, so please do let me know if you wish your donation to be refunded; the MS Trust is very understanding and I am told that this is very easy through Just Giving.

Sadly in being knocked off course, it was politics to Macmillan and a volcano to me - 'events dear boy, events'...
