Each week at least twelve young people in the UK die suddenly as a result of undiagnosed heart conditions. At Cardiac Risk In the Young we aim to save young lives & to help those affected by young sudden cardiac death (YSCD). We do this by providing support, information & screening those affected.

CRY aims to reduce the frequency of young sudden cardiac death by working with cardiologists and family doctors to establish good practice and appropriate screening facilities to promote and protect the cardiac health of our young.

The CRY Crusaders Rugby 7s team has a deep emotional connection with CRY. In 2005, its founding members were playing in an under 15's rugby game, when their team mate and great friend Seb English died suddenly. Exactly the same thing had happened to his Dad a decade earlier. Howard English (aged 32) collapsed and died whilst playing rugby, when Seb was 5. His cause of death was wrongly diagnosed as Floppy Mitral Valve and his widow was told that this condition was not inheritable and Howard’s death was a tragic one-off. Sebastian was found to have died of ARVC – which he had unknowingly inherited from his father Howard.

It is often difficult to consider that someone who is apparently young and fit may be at risk. However, every week in the UK at least 12 apparently ‘fit and healthy’ young people aged 35 and under die from undiagnosed heart conditions.

The majority of young sudden deaths are due to inherited forms of heart muscle disorders and irregular heart beats. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is the most common of these conditions. 1 in 500 people have hypertrophic cardiomyopathy alone – just 1 of the cardiac conditions CRY covers.

Your involvement, however small, is crucial to help us raise awareness about the risk of sudden cardiac death in young people.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure.
