The Welsh Guards have recently returned from a successful tour of Helmand Province in Afghanistan. Throughout the summer they relentlessly took the fight to the Taliban and conducted over 3242 combat patrols and sustained no less than 1463 attacks from the enemy. These successes were not without some considerable cost including the deaths of 7 soldiers, including the Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Rupert Thorneloe, the highest ranking officer killed in action since the Falkland’s War. In addition, a considerable number of soldiers have been in hospital and are now in rehabilitation centres. Furthermore, we must expect that more will, in the longer term, be mentally invalided by their experiences. The next 10 years promise to make extraordinary demands on the Regiment, serving Welsh Guardsmen, their partners and families and those members of the Regiment who have left through disability or work-related illness. The Welsh Guards Afghanistan Appeal is designed to support, alleviate and improve the prospects of those consequently in need. •Support the families and dependants of those killed in action by responding promptly to problems of bereavement and hardship. •Support those wounded on operations, particularly those who have had to leave the Army, to assist in finding them new employment and to help them become active family and community members. •Support the families and dependants of those seriously wounded or injured in prolonged recovery situations.

Story

Well, we did it!

In the end just three hardy souls made the trip setting off before 5am to make the run from northern Connecticut to the sea.  A massive thanks to Tom Mottur, a colleague from work, and Jeanne Thompson, my physio, for having the courage and good heart to come along for the ride.  We started in the the dark and the tail of a vicious storm which saw us dodging huge puddles and fallen branches and ended up having breakfast in a sunny New Haven, next to the sea.

Thank you for sponsoring me so far, for those of you who haven't yet got round to giving please read below and put your hand in your pocket; we can still raise plenty more money.

As some of you may know earlier this year I shattered my right leg in a ski racing accident.  As an ex-Welsh Guardsman this accident brought home to me the massive implications of the sort of injuries faced by the boys in Afghanistan, not least because I know many of those currently in Helmand Province.

My rehab is progressing well and it is time to put it to the test.  I intend to use my personal target of riding 100 kms on my bike, with a bunch of like minded friends to raise some money for those who's lives and families will have been irrecoverably changed by injuries sustained in Afghanistan.
