Story
The Charlie Waller Memorial Trust was established in memory of an Old Radleian, Charlie Waller. Outwardly Charlie seemed to have it all - to his friends and family he was a secure and happy advertising executive in his late twenties. But underneath the surface Charlie was battling with an overpowering depression, and, seeing no way of overcoming the illness, he tragically took his own life. CWMT seeks to raise awareness of depression and reduce stigma - the stigma that prevented Charlie discussing his illness with those close to him - so that sufferers are able to seek help before it is too late.
The Young Committee targets awareness raising and fundraising among people under the age of 30. Depression is staggeringly prevalent in young people, who often struggle to cope with the pressures of education, money shortages and the "real world" - and sadly it is this group who are most likely to conceal their illness. In its mildest form depression at this stage in life can have highly detrimental effect on a young person's ability to engage with the world and realise their potential, and in it's most severe form it can and does kill. Suicide is the greatest cause of death amongst men under the age of 35: a tragic waste of young lives. Yet it doesn't have to be this way - treatment has been proven to work but the biggest challenge is changing the perception of society and of individual sufferers so that they are able to seek treatment before it is too late.
