My story

As some of you may know I am doing the London marathon on Sunday the 22nd of April 2012. I was hoping to use my finishing time as an opportunity for qualification for the Olympics, but having contacted the relevant parties they said they are unlikely to pick me regardless of my time. Their loss I say.

On a more serious note, many of you will probably know that I am not the most athletic or healthiest of individuals in the world, preferring pizza to salad and TV to running. As such I would like to think that it is all the more impressive that I am doing a marathon. I have also recently come to the conclusion that 26.2 miles is a preeeeeeetty long way to run and the distance is becoming more and more daunting every time I think about it.

I hear you ask "Callum, why would you choose to run a marathon when you could choose to not run a marathon?". Well, the answer is two fold really. The first answer is that it is forcing my body to get into better shape (although my knees and shins would wholeheartedly disagree on this). The second answer is that it I am doing it for a charity, and an incredibly worthwhile one at that.

The charity I have chosen to run for is Carers UK, an organisation which provides help and support for the millions of people in the UK that care for family or friends. It is a fact that at some point in our lives we will all have to care for someone important to us and unfortunately it is often left to charities such as Carers UK to provide additional support. So if anything, see a potential donation to my cause as an investment! I have chosen to run for Carers UK as my girlfriend’s mum has recently started a company (Home Instead Senior Care/Wetherby) that provides support for elderly individuals in need of additional caring and compassionate support, thus tying in with the ethos of Carers UK.  Home Instead Senior Care specialises in non-medical care of older people in their own homes, assisting them to remain at home where they're most happy and comfortable, giving their families the freedom to relax in the knowledge that their loved ones are in excellent hands.

It would be awesome if as many people as possible could sponsor me and help me achieve my rather ambitious target of £2000. The good thing for everyone who sponsors me is that you can feel really good about yourself for doing a selfless deed; while the bad news for me is that by 2pm (hopefully!) on Sunday the 22nd of April I will be in excruciating pain (definitely).

I hope that you all now feel suitably compelled to donate whatever you can to an extremely apprehensive young man, who prior to September last year hadn't run a distance further than the cross country course in high school!

Many thanks in advance (and remember that every little helps)!
