Story
Thanks for visiting my fundraising page!
My name is Camille Barton and I have been selected to spend 12 months volunteering in Thailand for my gap year, leaving in August 2010. I'm currently studying for my A Levels in London, and will go on to study Politics at Sussex university in 2011.
Thailand is a beautiful and newly-industrialized country that lies at the heart of southeast Asia. Bordered by Laos, Burma and Cambodia, Thailand is a culturally and ethnically diverse country with a rich history. Having never been colonized, it still retains many of the beautiful traditions that have existed there for thousands of years.
My project will be based in the northern plains of Thailand, teaching disadvantaged children of various age groups. In my spare time, I hope to embark on other projects such as working with children on the Burmese border who are being affected by the conflict there.
I will be volunteering for an educational charity called Project Trust. Project Trust sends about two hundred volunteers to over twenty countries annually and is widely respected as one of the most experienced and professional gap year organisations in the UK. A unique feature of the organisation is the fact that they only send 17-19 year olds away for either 8 or 12 months-this is because they believe that complete emersion into a new community can only be achieved over an extended period of time. Volunteers only do work that is needed in a community so no jobs are taken away from the local people. Volunteers are selected following a 4-day residential course, based on Coll, a Hebridean island off the west coast of Scotland.
In order to fund my project, I need to raise £4,660 by June 2010. This money will cover travel, living expenses, insurance and as well as training, operating costs and support while overseas.
I will be putting on events, writing to charitable trusts and getting sponsered in order to raise the money.
Any donation you make is greatly appreciated, regardless of size; please remember that any other help you can give, be it time, venues, possible raffle prizes, or simply advice are also of great value to me.
Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and completly secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Project Trust gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.
