Everest Base Camp Trek with Discover Adventure · 12 October 2013 to 30 October 2013 ·

When life gets tough or it feels like there's nowhere to turn, Barnardo's is here. We make sure children and young people feel safer, happier and more hopeful by directly supporting them with specialist services across the UK. We have been changing childhoods and changing lives for over 150 years.

Story

In 2012 I was part of the Wates team who completed the 7 day trek to the summit of Kilimanjaro, the world's highest freestanding mountain, raising nearly £70,000 for Barnardos. This year, I am part of a larger team from the Wates Group who are out to reach the Base Camp of the world’s highest mountain Everest, again raising monies for Barnardo’s. The Base Camp Challenge is graded as “extreme” owing to its altitude, the length of the days and the 12 days trekking.

I also have a personal connection with the work that Barnardo’s do. My wife’s Grandfather was abandoned as a baby  in 1888, being left at Liverpool Street train station. He was found by a porter and taken to St Thomas’s Hospital, hence his name Thomas Porter. With the help of Barnardo’s, Thomas attended the ‘Central London District School for Paupers’ in Hanwell, nr Ealing (at the same time as Charlie Chaplin) and was later supported in becoming a grocers apprentice.

How your donation could help Barnardo’s:

£15 could pay for a “survival kit” of basic essentials such as shampoo, toothpaste and soap for an abuse girl who has fled her home with nothing

£45 could pay for three one-to-one homework support sessions for a young carer

£240 could pay for a year’s worth of support group sessions for 4 young people whose parents misuse drugs & alcohol

£1000 could help to pay for 7 overnight stay and specialist care for a terminally ill child or young person, while giving their parents and families an important break from the demands of caring

Please support me and Barnardo’s by clicking on the donate button on this page.
