I work for Alzheimer's Society as a Dementia Adviser. My role involves visiting and supporting people living with Dementia.

On a personal level my Nanny Phil died from Alzheimer's disease in 2005 before I became involved with dementia professionally. I watched her dissolve from a vibrant and lively woman into a person who couldn't walk, talk or recognise her own family. As I had grown up with my nan this was a devastating experience. This scenario is part of my working day now and each person is another Nanny Phil, becoming a fragment of their former selves, their families watching them slip away trapped inside their illness.

On a positive note, some people I visit are living well with their dementia due to the dedication and unconditional support of their families and professional networks.

Unfortunately at present there is no cure. Alzheimer's is just one of the many different types of dementia. It is the most common affecting approximately 70% of diagnosed people. For many it is a surprise to know that there are over 100 different types of dementia. Although medical science has made some important breakthroughs there is a long way to go to understand this illness fully and to find a cure!
