We are going to be taking part in the 10km Star Trek Midnight Walk for St. Francis Hospice on Saturday 3 July 2010. 

St. Francis Hospice (www.sfh.org.uk) is one of the largest adult hospices in the UK.  They are based in Havering.  The hospice provides an amazing service to patients and their families.  The hospice isn't aimed at just cancer patients - they also provide care to people with other life limiting illnesses, i.e. Motor Neurone Disease, heart disease and respiratory illness. 

The hospice provides care in the home, inpatient care at the hospice plus a day care centre in the hospice with a full range of therapies and treatments.  The team consists of specialists consultants, doctors, nurses, health care assistants and volunteers.  They provide practical and emotional support to both the patient and their families.

It costs around £6.5million per year in order for them to provide their wonderful service, over two thirds of which is gained through charitable donations.

My mum has been a regular patient of the hospice for over 10 years now during her battle with cancer.  She has used all of the services the hospice has to offer, including the inpatient care, home care and their day care centre.  She has also been an active participant in other dealings with the hospice.  She has given talks and seminars to both student and experienced doctors and has been a part of the refurbishment committee to help improve the hospice.  The team at the hospice have been absolutely amazing to not just my mum but also to my dad, myself and my brothers over the years and this is my way of trying to give back to them so they can carry on the fantastic work they do.
