Story

Hi my name is Carolyne Hunter. I’m a musician & music teacher but I’m giving up the comforts of a warm music studio to trek across the Grand Canyon for 8 days in October 2012 and help raise much needed funds for the Marie Curie Hospice in Penarth. I’m taking on this challenge in memory of my amazing husband Tim Hunter who spent his final days there.

Initially, Tim had to go into the Hospice, for a couple of weeks to get his medication sorted out. Unfortunately, we didn't realize that his condition had worsened considerably and he was only there for five days before he died. Thanks to the Marie Curie Nurses, he was pain free and comfortable at the end. He had his own room with beautiful views of the the Severn Estuary, and I was able to stay with him. After Tim passed away I felt close to the nurses who had been there for him at such a difficult time in his life, so when the chance came to do a sponsored trek and give something back, it felt like the right thing to do. When we first arrived at the hospice we saw a leaflet advertising a previous trek and Tim joked that he could imagine me doing something like that.

The purpose built hospice offers specialist care for people with cancer and other life limiting illnesses and support for families completely free of charge.
