Story

The Haiti Hospital Appeal is about to open our new maternity and paediatric unit in Haiti which is greatly exciting.

Rather than having birthday presents this year or going out for birthday drinks etc I'd be over the moon if you celebrated my birthday with me slightly more memorably. I'm taking part in the Haiti Hospital Appeal's Happy Birthday Campaign.

Birthday's are meant to be full of happiness and joy, but the reality is very different in Haiti. 75% of births take place at home without any medical support, placing mothers and babies at great risk, and subsequently giving Haiti the highest rate of infant and maternal mortality in the Western Hemisphere.

Just last week one of the children Reninca and I care for in Haiti passed away. Little Wilnese was born at home and due to difficulties at birth, suffered extreme disabilities. This year, rather than getting presents I don't need, I'd love you to donate on behalf of my birthday and Wilnese, so my birthday can provide safer birthing for mothers and babies in Haiti.

All the funds I raise will support and maternity and kids ward. Just as an example...it only costs us about £15 to provide a mother with a safe natural birth in our facility with a trained mid-wife.

Thanks everyone, and if you want to take part in our Happy Birthday Campaign yourself, please check out...www/haitihospitalappeal.org/happybirthdaycampaign
