Refuge Poetry Challenge · 15 August 2014

Refuge opened the world’s first refuge in West London in 1971. We support thousands of women & children every day, experiencing domestic and sexual violence, female genital mutilation, forced marriage, stalking, trafficking, prostitution & so-called ‘honour’ based violence.

Story

I spend a lot of time being angered and upset by the suffering women do around the world, and I was distressed to hear of the cutbacks and closures happening to domestic abuse refuges. [You can find more information on the closures here: http://www.theguardian.com/society/2014/aug/03/domestic-violence-refuge-crisis-women-closure-safe-houses?CMP=twt_gu]

Inspired by Claire Trévien's 100-poem challenge, I decided to take some form of action instead of just venting my spleen on Facebook.

So on 15 August, while other members of the team will be writing poems on postcards, I'll be writing on the Tube: one poem per line, written while travelling on that line. Needless to say I won't be posting regular updates and will undoubtedly smell like exhaust afterwards. I will post the poems later in the day.

Please give generously. Thank you. #refugepoetry
