In July 2010 I will be walking Hadrian's wall, which is a coast to coast walk of 85 miles. I've decided to do this to raise money for Fanconi Hope (www.fanconi.org.uk), a UK charity supporting families and sufferers of Fanconi Anaemia, a genetic disorder affecting children that causes bone marrow failure and predisposes to cancer.
Our nephew David is five years old and when he was two he was diagnosed with Fanconi Anaemia. Whilst he is a normal lively boy in every way, he has falling blood counts as a result of the disease, and is prone to infection. He has spent far longer in hospital than he ought to have done at his age, and his parents recognise that a successful bone marrow transplant is his main chance of survival. Sadly at this point in time, no match has been found for Dave and so his family are reliant on scientific research that may present other ways to give him the best chance of survival into adulthood.
Fanconi Anaemia only affects about 150 families in the UK and to date information surrounding the disease has been scant. By sponsoring me, your money will go towards funding research and providing support for affected families across the UK and Ireland. So many of us take our health and our children's health for granted. Every £10 that I manage to raise will help a child and their family have a better understanding of this illness and a better chance of survival.
