My story

At sometime this year, I think it must have been after a particularly boozy family gathering, I rashly agreed to join two of my sisters, Lis and Barbara, on a cycle ride from Dinard to La Rochelle.  The reason I was easily persuaded to make the trip is that two years ago Barbara's breast cancer returned and while a cure is not now an option the drugs are working and she's set herself a range of challenges. She's raising funds for Odyssey a small but innovative charity and I would like to help her to achieve her aim. I am staggered to find out that in order to do this I have agreed to cycle a distance of about 550 km.

A little about Odyssey, it offers outward bound type activities for those who have or have had cancer. The emotional and psychological effects of cancer are, for many people, as deeply disturbing as the disease itself. Odyssey uses the environment, art and music and the stimulation of uncertainty and surprise to help participants rebuild confidence and regain their zest for life.

You can find out more on their website at http://www.odyssey.org.uk but as someone who has benefitted from their programme Barbara can assure you that the week spent with Odyssey was unforgettable and would like to make it possible for others to enjoy its benefits.

It costs about £800 to pay for a place on the course (there is no charge to participants) her aim is to raise enough to allow someone to enjoy the experience she was lucky enough to enjoy.  My aim is to spend an enjoyable 10 days with my sisters but if possible contribute to her fundraising efforts.

Even if you don't decide to donate, feel free to visit  my sister's blog at  http://hotwheelsinfrance.blogspot.com/ where you can share the ups, downs and photos of the first part of her journey. We will be attempting to add some details of the second leg as we go along but it is more likely we will update the blog once we get back.

I have decided to remain teetotal during this journey as Barbara has just mentioned that she has discovered a cycle path from Brest to Budapest. Who knows at least I will already have the bike this time!
